Google Talk, the new instant messaging service from Google, is a strategic move by the search engine giant to compete directly with Yahoo, Microsoft, and America Online. The updated version of Google's search engine is set to be released in the next few weeks, featuring improved algorithms and an added feature to view news, stocks, and weather.
Google Talk offers a new platform for text and voice communication, similar to Skype, allowing users to make free calls through their PC. The program also includes a text messaging service akin to MSN Messenger.
Currently in the testing phase, Google Talk requires a Gmail account for usage. Contacts from the user's Gmail account are automatically added to the app, streamlining communication without the need to manually input contacts.
Google Talk is compatible with various messaging platforms such as Apple's iChat, Gaim, Adium, Trillian Pro, and Psi, all of which share Jabber technology. However, it is not compatible with Microsoft's Hotmail or Yahoo's messaging network.
